Physical Therapist Management of Individuals Who Cycle, Surf, and Rock Climb

Adam Babitts, PT, DPT, OCS

Adam Babitts, PT, DPT, OCS received his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from the University of Maryland College Park. He went on to earn his Doctorate of Physical Therapy Degree at Mount St. Mary’s University in Los Angeles in 2013 where he eventually taught as adjunct faculty. He subsequently completed an Orthopaedic Residency from Health Care Partners Physical Therapy (now Optum Physical Therapy) in Torrance, CA. After residency, he completed a movement science fellowship through Washington University in St. Louis and was mentored by Dr. Su Wang who established his foundation for treating surfing-related injuries. He is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist (OCS) through the American Physical Therapy Board of Specialists. He is currently enrolled at the University of Washington School of Medicine in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine working toward a PhD in Rehabilitation Science. Prior to starting his PhD, he lived in Redondo Beach, CA where he treated patients with injuries from surfing, as well as other recreational and sport activities.

Stacey Brickson, PT, PhD, ATC, CSCS

Stacey Brickson, PT, PhD, ATC, CSCS earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physical therapy, a certificate in athletic training (ATC) (1992), and a PhD in exercise physiology (2002) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has worked in many aspects of health care, including clinical practice, industry, and academics. Currently, Dr. Brickson has a private physical therapy practice, CronoPT, where she uses her knowledge and skills as a health care professional, certified bike fitter, and cycling coach to treat patients including numerous cyclists for various impairments. Additionally, Dr. Brickson teaches anatomy and physiology at Madison Area Technical College and serves as a member of the Board of Visitors for the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Christopher C. Carcia, PT, PhD, SCS, OCS

Christopher C. Carcia, PT, PhD, SCS, OCS earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physical therapy from Arcadia University (1989), a post-professional Master of Science degree in physical therapy with an emphasis in orthopedics from the Institute of Health Professions at Massachusetts General Hospital (1999) and a PhD in Kinesiology with an emphasis in sports medicine from the University of Virginia (2002). Over the years, Dr. Carcia has worked in private practice and corporate and hospital settings treating patients with musculoskeletal dysfunction. He is certified as both an orthopedic and sports specialist as recognized by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties. Dr. Carcia has a long list of publications as well as regional, national, and international presentations. He has worked in academia for over 20 years and currently works full-time for Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction as an Associate Professor and founding Director of the Physical Therapy program. Dr. Carcia serves his profession by functioning as a reviewer for numerous journals, an Editor for the AOPT’s Clinical Practice Guidelines as well as volunteering his time assisting impaired veterans get back on their bicycles at the annual National Disabled Veteran’s Winter Sports Clinic.

Jason Hooper, PT, DPT, OCS, SCS

Jason Hooper, PT, DPT, OCS, SCS, has been a licensed physical therapist since 2015. He received his Orthopedic Clinical Specialist certification in 2018 and his Sports Clinical Specialist certification in 2019. Jason has worked in outpatient orthopedics since 2015 and has a specialty working with patients in the rock climbing community. He is the owner of Hooper's Beta Physical Therapy, where he works exclusively with rock climbers; the Co-Owner of Hooper's Beta YouTube where he creates online content regarding rock climbing training and rehabilitation; and works at UC San Diego Health at the Koman Outpatient pavilion which is a sports and orthopedic center. Volunteer activities include participating at local climbing competitions as on hand medical personal as well as participating in UC San Diego team practices for question and answer sessions.

Michael T. Reeder, CO

Michael T. Reeder, CO earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Youngstown State University (1984) and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine (1988). Subsequently, Dr. Reeder completed an emergency medicine residency which was followed by a primary care sports medicine fellowship in Albany, NY. Dr. Reeder practiced sports and emergency medicine for 25 years including time as team physician at Colorado Mesa University. His practice included athletes of every age and activity from youth leagues to Olympic athletes. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Reeder is employed as a faculty member in the Department of Kinesiology and teaches in the Athletic Training and Physician Assistant educational programs. He is also actively involved teaching and research in the Monfort Family Human Performance Laboratory at Colorado Mesa University. Additionally, Dr. Reeder spends time formally educating medical students, family practice residents, and primary care sports medicine fellows.

Jared Vagy, PT, DPT, OCS, CSCS

Jared Vagy, PT, DPT, OCS, CSCS received his doctorate in physical therapy (DPT) from the University of Southern California (USC) and completed a one-year residency in orthopedics and a one-year fellowship in movement science. Dr. Vagy is a clinical assistant professor of physical therapy in the DPT program at USC and is a mentor in both the orthopedic residency and upper extremity elite athlete fellowship programs. Jared delivers lectures and seminars worldwide on the topic of rock climbing injuries. He is the director of The Student Climbing SIG, a pro-bono clinician lead special interest group providing mentorship to physical therapy students from over 50 Universities. He is the founder of the Rock Rehab Community, a group of medical providers from over the world who connect to expand their knowledge on the management of rock-climbing injuries. And he is the developer of the Rock Rehab Series, a continuing education course series for physical therapists who are interested in treating rock climbers. He is passionate about climbing and enjoys working with climbers of all ability levels, ranging from novice climbers to the top professional climbers in the world.

Su Wang, PT, DPT, OCS, CSCS, CNC

Su Wang, PT, DPT, OCS, CSCS, CNC was raised in Ft. Collins, CO and is the founder of Movement Specialists Physical Therapy, PC. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Biology and Chinese from Washington University in St. Louis (WUSTL) in 2005. She then graduated with her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine (WUSM) in 2008. After graduation, Dr. Wang moved to Orange County, CA to practice as a physical therapist. She has experience in a variety of settings including sports, geriatrics, aquatics, and orthopedics. In 2009 she earned her certification as Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and in 2011 became a board Certified Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist (OCS). Movement Specialists Physical Therapy, PC was established in 2014. To incorporate holistic wellness, Dr. Wang went on to earn her Certification for Nutritional Consultant (CNC) in 2018. Dr. Wang served as a clinical instructor and mentor for the Movement System Impairments (MSI) fellowship program with WUSM. As a competitive swimmer for 14 years and two-time NCAA qualifier in the 200m butterfly, Dr. Su understands how important proper movement is to both the recreational and elite level athlete. In addition to swimming, Su is an avid runner and enjoys running marathons as well as rock climbing as another way to stay active. However, her greatest passion is surfing. She serves Orange County surfers from weekend warriors and recreational surfers to professional surfers and up and coming surfers as young as 8 years old.
