State CEU Approvals for Independent Study Courses

CEU Information

AOPT CEUs are accepted by the majority of state physical therapy licensure boards, as allowed by the type of course requirements in state regulations. For individual state requirements, please visit your state licensure board website.

Continuing education requirements are regulated by the state boards of physical therapy. Each state licensing board has its own policies and procedures related to continuing education of its licensees. State boards of physical therapy place the responsibility on licensees to follow rules and regulations related to the practice of physical therapy and maintenance of licensure in their states. Licensees should verify acceptance of continuing education courses with their state licensing board by reviewing the relevant state practice act and/or administrative code.

AOPT applies for pre-approval of courses on a course by case basis in the states of California, Ohio, and Texas. The approval codes for these states are listed below.

PLEASE NOTE: Accrediting agencies may change the number of contact hours awarded for an independent study course. If you have questions pertaining to your individual state requirements, you will need to go to your state board’s site and research regulations and requirements. It is the registrant and/or student’s responsibility to become knowledgeable about requirements within their own state. Course participants are responsible for submitting their own continuing education certificates and additional requirements independently per their own licensure and state board regulations

California

The AOPT is an Approved Provider through the California Physical Therapy Association Approved Continuing Education Program; the AOPT's Approved Provider number is CPTAAP-32, effective dates: January 1, 2023 - December 31, 2025.

Nevada

Nevada Board of Physical Therapy Examiners does not approve credits above 1.5 CEUs (15 contact hours) since licensees must earn 1.5 CEUs (15 contact hours) per year for licensure renewal and no hours may be carried over to the next licensure cycle. Additionally, the Nevada Board of Physical Therapy Examiners does not allow more than .8 CEUs (8 contact hours) to be awarded for content that is not considered clinical. Pennsylvania

The AOPT is designated as a pre-approved provider by the Pennsylvania State Board of Physical Therapy. Pennsylvania does not accept CEUs or contact hours awarded for courses pertaining to practice management, practice building, dry-needling, payment policy or regulatory requirements. Pennsylvania approval information is listed in each course’s details page. The following courses have been approved for direct access credit:
