Abstract:

Cardiovascular conditions are common comorbidities in the patient receiving outpatient orthopaedic physical therapy services. Management of these conditions often includes the use of one or more medications that could have a significant impact on the patient’s response to physical therapy treatment. This monograph will highlight the most common cardiovascular conditions along with evidence-based pharmacological management and how medication side effects may present in a patient. Two case studies are included to highlight important concepts presented in the monograph.

PHARMACOLOGICAL MANAGEMENT FOR DIABETES MELLITUS

Abstract:

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease for which management is the only option. Exercise is one of the first-line treatments for Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) and one in which physical therapists can play an important role. However, an understanding of the pharmacologic treatment that has been prescribed for the patient is necessary. This monograph will highlight the various agents used in the treatment of Type 2 DM and their potential adverse effects. Three case studies are included to highlight important concepts presented in this monograph. The cases relate to the implication of diabetes mellitus along with a primary orthopaedic condition. The first case describes a 70-year-old male who is an avid golfer with a 3-month history of left hip pain with an insidious onset. His past medical history includes Type 2 diabetes mellitus. The second case is a 72-yearold female who was referred by her neurologist for outpatient physical therapy for balance training having experienced two falls in the past 6 months. She has a past medical history that includes Type 2 diabetes mellitus and also coronary heart disease. The final case is a 65-year-old female who was referred by her primary care physician for outpatient physical therapy with a complaint of right knee pain. She reports a 2-month history of right knee pain after squatting to pick up her granddaughter. Her past medical history includes Type 2 diabetes mellitus and also hypertension.
