Course Description

This course provides the registrant with specific clinical information needed to evaluate and treat the unique needs of the pediatric patient. Primary emphasis is on integrating the science of growth and development and applying evidence-based methods to achieve a safe and effective intervention. Authors contribute their own area of expertise to allow for in-depth coverage of pertinent topics essential to health of the pediatric patient. A companion CD with video clips shows proper demonstration of exercises specifically designed to condition the athlete for throwing.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course the participant will be able to do the following:

  1. Understand the importance of physical activity when managing the pediatric patient.
  2. Identify the barriers to health-related fitness in children and adolescents of all abilities.
  3. Identify effective interventions that improve physical activity levels in children and adolescents of all abilities and discuss appropriate recommendations and resources with families for improving physical activity and nutrition practices that promote health and wellness.
  4. Recognize and evaluate the critical period of growth and development in children and apply this information to safe and effective exercise options during these periods.
  5. Obtain the tools and knowledge to develop and apply an appropriate exercise program for healthy and children with disease, appropriate to the stage of growth and development.
  6. Understand anatomical and physiologic differences between the pediatric patient and the adult and identify potential risk factors for overuse injury.
  7. Apply knowledge of tissue repair and remodeling and appropriately timed therapeutic interventions to successfully rehabilitate overuse injuries in the young athlete.
  8. Understand the specific nutrition requirements of young athletes and provide guidelines for daily fueling and hydration.
  9. Identify strategies for working with athletes who have nutrition-related disorders such as diabetes.
  10. Learn how to communicate with athletes and parents about supplement issues and be able to provide guidelines for pre- and post-competition eating.
  11. Understand how to identify and diagnosis common youth throwing injuries and develop an intervention program for common youth throwing injuries.
  12. Evaluate the scientific evidence regarding the safety and efficacy of resistance training for children and adolescents.
  13. Understand the potential benefits, risks, and concerns associated with pediatric resistance training.
  14. Design and implement a resistance training program for children and adolescents with different needs, goals, and abilities.
