Course Description

The purpose of this course is to provide the physical therapist with a working knowledge of the female athlete triad. Authors from the fields of primary medicine, nutrition, and psychology contribute their expertise to defining and enlightening the reader on the multidisciplinary approach to effective care of the patient having this disorder. The impact of the triad on rehabilitation efforts is also elucidated.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course the participant will be able to do the following:

  1. Define the female athlete triad in terms of etiology, pathophysiology, and risk factors.
  2. Delineate the role of key health care providers in the screening, treatment, and prevention of the female athlete triad. This includes the primary care physician, the registered dietitian, the sports psychologist, and the physical therapist.
  3. Describe the pathophysiologic mechanisms underlying energy availability and menstrual function, and understand how they ultimately affect bone health.
  4. Describe confidentiality issues related to working with athletes.
  5. Discuss common counseling approaches for athletes with disordered eating.
  6. Describe several myths about eating disorders.
  7. Describe the risk factors associated with exercise and overtraining in relation to the female athlete triad.
  8. Describe the essential components of medical screening, psychological screening, and nutritional interventions.
  9. Describe the risk factors associated with exercise and overtraining in relation to the female athlete triad.
  10. Discuss the role of education in the prevention of the female athlete triad.
  11. Discuss the general principles related to adolescent female energy needs, bone health, and body weight goals to assist in the prevention of the female athlete triad.
  12. Understand and apply the principles of rehabilitation for patients with the female athlete triad.
  13. Describe the effects of weight-bearing exercise on bone mineral density as it relates to patients with the female athlete triad.
  14. Discuss the limitations of current knowledge and barriers to recognition and treatment of the female athlete triad.
