15.2: Postoperative Management of Orthopaedic Surgeries

Course Description
This Independent Study Course series will take a look at postoperative management of orthopaedic surgeries with specific emphasis on physical therapy interventions. The authors will cover the management not only from the standpoint of a clinical perspective, but also from the evidence for effectiveness of practice that appears in the literature. These clinical documents include studies that have been completed and discuss the need to continue to refine practice according to the available evidence. The various authors will provide a critical review of literature related to the following areas with respect to orthopaedic surgeries of the hip, knee, foot and ankle, shoulder, wrist and hand, and spine.

Objectives
Upon completion of this monograph, the course participant will be familiar with the following with respect to postoperative management of orthopaedic surgeries for the following areas: the hip, knee, foot and ankle, shoulder, wrist and hand, and spine.

  1. Identify various disorders and the relevant anatomic structures with regards to specific orthopaedic surgical intervention.
  2. Describe the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and surgical indications, procedures, and contraindications for patients with specific pathology.
  3. Describe and discuss different surgical interventions and procedures for the treatment of specific disorders.
  4. Identify modifications to and possible complicating factors in the rehabilitation process for a patient who has undergone specific orthopaedic surgeries.
  5. Develop a postoperative rehabilitation program based on tissue healing constraints and intervention goals.
  6. Demonstrate knowledge of the different phases of rehabilitation and describe physical therapy guidelines for postoperative patients.
  7. Discuss the relevant research literature regarding outcomes following postoperative management.
  8. Evaluate treatment outcomes.
  9. Describe intervention techniques utilized during rehabilitation after surgical procedures and apply these techniques to clinical practice.
