14.2: Clinical Applications for Orthopaedic Basic Science

This course consists of 3 pairs of related monographs that cover cartilage and bone, ligaments and tendons, and vascular and peripheral nerves. The first monograph in each group describes the basic science of the topic in question including the most recent research. The second corresponding monograph details specific considerations for rehabilitation. The authors of these modules bring together important information from a basic science perspective and apply the current concepts for optimal clinical interventions.

Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Describe normal structure and function of cartilage and bone, ligaments and tendons, and vascular and peripheral nerves.
  2. Describe injury mechanisms and stages of healing for cartilage and bone, ligaments and tendons, and vascular and peripheral nerves.
  3. Describe the components and functional roles played by articular cartilage, compact bone, and cancellous bone during movement.
  4. Describe the process of fracture healing and recognize the signs and symptoms of complications associated with fractures.
  5. Discuss the effects of early joint motion and loading on healing.
  6. Understand how immobilization and mobilization affect the structural and functional properties of articular cartilage and bone.
  7. Discuss both the beneficial and potentially harmful effects of physical activity and exercise on the maturing skeleton.
  8. Understand the tissue and resultant functional changes that occur with osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and aging.
  9. Discuss how the Physical Stress Theory can be used to guide treatment decisions for individuals with osteoarthritis.
  10. Understand the relationship of vascular injuries and complications associated with orthopaedic trauma.
  11. Identify and discuss common arterial and venous pathologies and considerations regarding treatment
  12. Identify risk factors that predispose patients to peripheral vascular disease.
  13. Identify the body's vascular response to physical therapy intervention.
  14. Select proper treatment goals and plan effective rehabilitation interventions to maximize tissue healing based on understanding of the physiology of each stage of healing and based on the latest scientific evidence for cartilage and bone, ligaments and tendons, and vascular and peripheral nerves.
